Background of the Study
Displacement caused by conflict has long-lasting effects on both individuals and communities, reshaping not only social structures but also local governance systems. In the context of Nigeria’s northeast, particularly in Monguno LGA, Borno State, displacement due to the Boko Haram insurgency has deeply affected traditional leadership structures. Traditional leaders, such as Emirs, Chiefs, and village heads, have historically played crucial roles in community governance, conflict resolution, and maintaining social order. However, the widespread displacement of populations has disrupted these roles, challenging the authority and influence of traditional leaders.
As millions of people are forced to flee their homes in conflict zones like Monguno, traditional leaders face new challenges in maintaining their positions and fulfilling their responsibilities. These leaders often find themselves displaced alongside their communities, or in situations where their authority is undermined by both the influx of new populations and the dominance of external governance systems. This study aims to explore how the displacement of people in Monguno has impacted the authority and functioning of traditional leadership structures, especially with the increasing role of government and humanitarian agencies in the area.
Statement of the Problem
The displacement caused by insurgency has significantly altered the socio-political landscape of Monguno LGA. Traditional leadership structures, once central to community governance and conflict resolution, are now facing profound challenges. These challenges include a loss of authority, changes in the role of traditional leaders, and difficulties in maintaining cohesion among displaced communities. Despite the critical role that traditional leadership plays in maintaining peace and order, there has been limited research on how displacement has specifically affected their power, influence, and ability to function effectively in the post-conflict period. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the effects of displacement on traditional leadership structures in Monguno LGA.
